Pennsylvania: Scranton, – Eden Cafe (Eatery Review)

As we travelled through Pennsylvania towards the Finger Lakes Region of New York State we needed to find somewhere to grab some food. Our hopes were not high of tracking down a place that served ‘proper’ vegan food. To our surprise, we discovered the Eden Cafe in Scranton. We had planned to stop in Scranton to visit the Electric City Trolley Museum and Steamtown National Historic Site so this was perfect! They also have a second location in Wilkes-Barre.

The restaurant is quite small and we’d have felt pretty uncomfortable if it was full during these times of the Covid-19 pandemic. Luckily, it was empty – they had only recently started in house dining again and most of their clients hadn’t realised this and were still in takeout mode. The cafe itself is simply decorated, with the only splash or creativity being some artwork for sale on the walls. Never mind it was clean and comfortable – our reason for coming here was for the food after all!

The menu is largely made up of comfort food; burgers, pizzas, sandwiches and wraps. After some deliberation, we settled for some wraps. One was on the specials menu, a ‘salmon’ wrap and the other was the Rolo wrap, with grilled ‘buffalo chicken’. Of course, none of the protein was meat this being a vegan restaurant.

When the food came it looked great. There were some veggies on the sides. We had read some reviews that were critical of the veggies as they were obviously from a packet. We’re not quite so picky with that sort of thing – it is lazy, yes but our interest was in the main dish, not the sides! By this time we were hungry as we’d skipped lunch so we tucked into the wraps, and they were delicious, especially the ‘salmon’ wrap. As usual, we swapped half our wraps to get a taste of both dishes. Neither disappointed.

So, in conclusion, would we recommend the Eden Cafe. The answer is yes. There are not many places serving a range of vegan food in the area but even so, it was a good find in our minds. The real plus was the menu had a lot to chose from and what we had was great.
