A small vegan kitchen, hidden away in the backstreets of Bend
There are a growing number of options for vegans in Bend, Oregon – and being our home town we feel we have a duty to try them out. Spread the love so to speak.
I recently discovered that a new place, Root Down Kitchen, had opened up away from the main tourist areas of Downtown / Box Factory / Old Mill so I thought we’d give it a bash.
Having said that this was away from the main tourist areas it is actually well placed, being a 5 to 10 minutes walk from all of them, hidden in a tiny strip mall with a Mexican restaurant and an e-bike shop. There are a couple of picnic tables outside and a few tables inside but seating is limited – but you can always go with a take out.
Currently, the menu options are fairly limited, a few sandwiches, tacos and some bowls. The owner said she is planning to expand the menu going forward – which will be interesting to see.
We were in a bit of a hurry because we had an event to go to and the store was about to close so we opted for a couple of the sandwiches; the Chickpea Salad Sandwich (curried chickpea salad with spinach, pickled onions, carrot curls and wasabi aioli on a wheat bun) and the Sesame Dijon Tempeh Sandwich (Dijon glazed tempeh topped with carrot and golden beet curls tossed in miso yuzu vinaigrette, chopped kale, sumac marinated onions and Dijon aioli on a wheat bun).
As everything is assembled right there it was not long before our food arrived. The sandwiches were quite small, but they were just right-sized for what we wanted. The Chickpea Salad Sandwich was delicious – I just loved the pickled onions. As usual, we split our meals, so I got to try Karen’s sandwich, which tasted great too. The vinaigrette and glazed onions were amazing. As you might guess I have a thing about onions!
We enjoyed our meal at Roots Down Kitchen and would definitely go there again. Next time we’ll try out the bowls and some of the other options on the menu (which hopefully will have new options by then).
