Louisiana: New Orleans – Killer PoBoys

I was out and about in New Orleans, exploring the French Quarter when I stumbled across a small restaurant called Killer Poboys. In fact, I had just been checking out the Museum of Death (see my review), and all the stories of death had got my stomach rumbling (not quite sure of the cause and effect here). What caught my eye was the big sign outside about having excellent vegan and vegetarian options. Sold! Also, I liked the skull and baguette signage.

Probably a good place to start is to describe a po’boy. Well, it is a traditional sandwich from Louisiana,  almost always consists of a filling of meat, which is usually roast beef or fried seafood, often shrimp, crawfish, fish, oysters or crab. Not a good selection for a vegan! The filling is served on baguette-like New Orleans French bread, known for its crisp crust and fluffy centre.

The interior of the cafe is small and modest, nothing fancy here!

The menu options were pretty basic. This is not a 100 per cent vegan restaurant so there is a lot of meat options, but there was a couple of good vegan/vegetarian options. There was a roasted sweet potato po’boy with a blackeyed pea and pecan spread with braised greens and a roasted cauliflower sandwich with romesco sauce, avocado, radish, crispy kale on whole grain bread. As I wanted the full New Orleans experience I opted for the sweet potato po’boy. I added a side of smothered greens. To wash the food down I selected a can of Irish Channel Stout.

It was not long before the food arrived and I was tucking in. I had not realised how hungry I actually was. The food was simple – there were a lot of greens, especially with the side dish! It was super tasty and hit the spot. Needless to say, it was not long before I had polished off my po’boy.

If you find yourself in the french quarter and looking for a quick, whole bite to eat then you could do worse than trying out Killer Poboy.
