UK: York – National Railway Museum
The museum tells the story of rail transport in Britain and its impact on society. It is the home of the national collection of historically significant railway vehicles such as Mallard, Stirling Single, Duchess of Hamilton and a Japanese bullet train.
UK: London – National Maritime Museum
National Maritime Museum, the world's largest museum dedicated to things nautical, tells the long and complicated history of Britain's relationship to the sea. The museum houses a huge collection of maritime exhibits including maritime art (both British and 17th-century Dutch), cartography, manuscripts including official public records, ship models and plans, scientific and navigational instruments.
UK: Greenwich, London – Cutty Sark
The Cutty Sark is a British clipper ship. Built on the River Leven, Dumbarton, Scotland in 1869 for the Jock Willis Shipping Line, she was one of the last tea clippers to be built and one of the fastest, coming at the end of a long period of design development for this type of vessel, which halted as steamships took over their routes.
USA: Oregon – Erikson Aircraft Collection
Located in the small town of Madras in Central Oregon, the Erickson Aircraft Museum holds a private collection of World War II military aircraft. The collection is very impressive and even more so when you realise that most of these aircraft are still airworthy.
USA: New York – Wings of Eagles
The Wings of Eagles Discovery Centre in Horseheads, New York is a small aerospace museum and education centre. If you love aircraft and science then this is a great place to spend and hours two. It is family-friendly, especially if your children are a little older.
USA: Pennsylvania – Steamtown National Historic Site
I love trains, especially steam locomotives so I was totally thrilled to find out that our New England road trip took us through Scranton, Pennsylvania home to the Steamtown National Historic Site which is full of old locomotives & rolling stock.
USA: Pennsylvania – Electric City Trolley Museum
The Electric City Trolley Museum in Scranton is a tribute to the first mass transit systems that enabled people to move from their homes in suburbs into American cities, enabling their meteoric growth. Eventually, the trolleys were replaced as automobiles became mass-produced. This museum preserves the history of this gentler form of transport, offering a chance to see some restored trolleys and also the opportunity to take a ride through Scranton and see some of the important historical sites there.
USA: Oregon – Tillamook Air Museum
Tillamook Air Museum is located in a rural setting close to the Oregon Pacific coast. In World War II this was the site of a Naval base used to deploy K Class airships (blimps) across the Pacific ocean to detect enemy ships and submarines.
USA: Oregon – Evergreen Aviation Museum
Located near to the small Oregon town of McMinnville is the excellent Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum. I discovered this place a few years back and have been fortunate to visit on a couple of occasions.
USA: Washington – The Museum of Flight
This 15-acre campus includes over 160 air and spacecraft, the original Boeing Aircraft factory and flight simulators. From the world’s oldest fighter plane to the supersonic Concorde, and the only full-scale NASA Space Shuttle Trainer.
USA: Alabama – Space & Rocket Center
The U.S. Space and Rocket Center at Huntsville, Alabama is somewhere I had long wanted to visit. The area was once primarily famed as the watercress capital of the world but today it ranks as the 2nd largest technology center in the United States.
USA: Florida – The Naval Aviation Museum
Naval Aviation Museum on the Naval Airbase in Pensacola is free to enter, which should not deter you from visiting if you like museums and military aircraft. There is also a great restaurant diner with loads of memorabilia from the past endeavors of the Naval Airman.
