Singapore: Wanderlust Hotel and Little India

LITTLE INDIA

Little India is an ethnic district in Singapore, located east of the Singapore River, across from Chinatown, and is commonly known as Tekka in the Indian Singaporean community. At one time Little India once had a racecourse, cattle herders and brick kilns. Whilst these are long gone, time stands still in pockets of this historic district.

Olden-day trades sit next to newer businesses: flower-garland vendors, modern eateries, boutique hotels, as well as arts groups.

Little India today is one of Singapore’s most vibrant districts. In the 1840s, many Europeans lived in the area, mainly for the racecourse. When cattle trading took root, it became a mostly Indian trade as traders hired Indian migrant workers. Certain goods and services took off, and mosques and Hindu temples were built.

Today Little India is one of Singapore’s most vibrant districts and here you will find an interesting blend of cultures demonstrated by the interposed Hindu and Chinese temples, mosques and churches. It is also a great place to enjoy Indian food (which we love) from South Indian vegetarian food to North Indian tandoori dishes.

THE WANDERLUST HOTEL

The Wanderlust Hotel is a unusual and somewhat funky boutique hotel located in Singapore’s vibrant Little India district. It is steps away from a MTR (metro station) and tons of great restaurants (mostly Indian cuisine).

This four story boutique hotel has 29 rooms, featuring works from several Singapore design studios. There are no identical rooms, the same can be said for each floor in the hotel which has its own theme: ‘industrial glam’, ‘eccentricity’, ‘is it just black and white?’ and ‘creature comforts’.

When we arrived at the hotel I was suffering from 5 broken ribs, an injury I had sustained only a day or two before. Needless to say I was in a lot of pain and getting comfortable was not easy. The staff at the Wanderlust were wonderful in finding me a room that worked for us. The rooms are very unique – mostly small in size but well equipped with some lovely design touches. If you are a fan of industrial design and architectural art then the Wanderlust is the place for you.

Despite the misery of my injuries I very much enjoyed our stay at this lovely little boutique hotel.
