We arrived in Portland on a cold and wet day and were in desperate need of some comfort food. In my research on vegan food options I had discovered Back to Eden cafe and bakery, which is located on the trendy Alberta street on Portland’s east side. It turned out to be just what the doctor ordered.
It didn’t take too long to make our choices, despite the menu have a lot of tasty sounding options. I went for the biscuits and gravy, as I said we were looking for comfort food, and Karen opted for the root vegetable hash. The area around Alberta street is a very diverse community so waiting for our food to arrive gave us the opportunity to do some serious people watching. The arrival of our delicious dinner brought our focus back to our rumbling tummies.
Despite being full from our dinner we were tempted by the scones and somehow we managed to squeeze them in. And to make matter worst we stopped by the bakery counter and ended up buying and eating a very rich peanut and dark chocolate bar. We were beyond full so we headed out to walk off our excesses. The weather had picked and we were even treated to some brief glimpses of sunlight.
The area around Alberta Street is renowned for its arts scene. There is a lot of wonderful street art and some quirky shops (this is Portland after all!) We spent a good hour and half wandering the streets dropping into several shops – it was Black Friday. If you should visit Back to Eden it is well worth spending sometime exploring the streets around.
