I have been a great fan of the steampunk movement for some time – the combination of sci-fi fantasy and the retro industrial age machinery really interests me. So, I was very excited to discover when planning a trip out to visit Taliesin East the existence of Steampunk Manor just a few miles away.

I was not quite sure what I expected – perhaps a few steampunk knickknacks scattered around. Oh no, the owners Daniel and Irena had gone full bore steampunk. The main “public” rooms of the house have been turned into a cornucopia of steampunkiness. There was so much on display that it was truly sensory overload. In fact, even after spending a couple of days of exploring the place I kept on finding new things I hadn’t seen before. The furniture was, as to be expected, totally opulent and I fell in love with the pump organ and the harp in the sitting room. The harp was for more than display, Irena was learning to play and we managed to persuade her to play a few tunes – considering how short a time she had been learning she was excellent!

The hosts, Daniel and Irena were very friendly and gave us an exceptionally warm welcome and spent a considerable amount of time just chatting to us. They are relatively new to the bed and breakfast game, having bought the property just a year earlier. It sounded like it was very run down when they bought it and we were amazed by what they had achieved in such a short space of time.

Our room was located in the basement, along with a second room and a common area. The decor down here was very different – more country and frills. Not exactly my style! Anyway, this apparently is the original decorations and furniture that the previous owners went for. Hopefully, in time Daniel and Irena will add their own touches to these spaces. There are also rooms on the second floor – which we didn’t get to see – but the pictures on their website suggest they are more in keeping with the steampunk style.

Now for my favourite part of staying at the Steampunk Manor – the breakfasts. Luckily, during our stay the weather was great and we were able to eat our breakfast outside on the wrap-around deck. I think the breakfasts, at least the fancy parts, are prepared by Irena – and what a job she does. She obviously loves her work as the presentation was stunning and very, very tasty too. I would happily stay in a run-down shack b&b if the breakfasts came like this!

The Steam Punk Manor is located in the sleepy town of Spring Green, which is actually very quaint. You can walk into the centre in about ten minutes, where there are some small boutique shops, restaurants and bars. If you are looking for a bar that serves food then look no further than Freddy Valentine’s Public House, which is located in the historic State Bank of Spring Green. They have kept many of the original features, including the vault which now a private dining room!

There are several good reasons to spend time at Spring Green. Local attractions include Frank Lloyd Wrights Taliesin, the amazing House on the Rock and the splendid American Players Theater – a world-class theatre company located in the woods of Wisconsin.

If you are thinking of going to this part of Wisconsin to attend the American Players Theater or check out other local attractions and are looking for somewhere different, comfortable and cosy to stay, then I recommend looking at the Steampunk Manor.
