Established in 2011, Ruby’s is nestled away from Ashland’s busy high street on the border of the Historic Railroad District. They feature a wide variety of breakfast burritos and eclectic lunch sandwiches, including many vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options. Ruby’s also offers locally roasted organic coffee, espresso and a large selection of house-made refreshments (as well as beer, wine and cocktails).
We have been to Ruby’s before and loved the food. I can get very busy during the peak of the tourist season so I can take a while for the food to arrive. Luckily, we had sometime to spare. The atmosphere inside Ruby’s is a little funky, but we like it. On this occasion we decided to do something a little different and having ordered our food we went next door to Gil’s, a sister establishment to Ruby’s, that is more of a pub, offering a fairly broad selection of beers on tap. Although Gil’s does food too they don’t mind you eating your orders from Ruby’s there.
We are very fond of darker beers, but being the summer for some reason they think dark beer drinkers switch to lighter beers. How wrong they are! We did find something that did spark our imagination – a white stout. How has ever heard of such a thing. Anyway, we decided to try it out and it was pretty good!.
The sun was definitely on its way out for the day so the temperature we beginning to drop, but being on holiday we wanted to be outside in the garden at the front of Gil’s. Luckily, a table next to a fire pit opened up for us (well actually Karen was stalking the occupants, so when they left she jumped in and snagged us some seats!
After a little while our food arrived. We had ordered the Wendy Burrito; made up of a curried tofu scramble with onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, chard and potatoes, topped with D’s cheese sauce and the Rubenstein; a sandwich on rye bread with marinated tempeh, a homemade kraut and spicy three mile island sauce. Not sure this was totally vegan but it tasted great. This was was true comfort food and the portions were good value for the money.
We have been to Ruby’s a couple of times now and have yet to be disappointed. Be prepared to wait a while for your food. Alternatively, ring ahead and then just turn up pick up your delights!
