For those who are following a plant-based diet Portland, Oregon offers a great range of places to dine out or grab a quick meal

We often travel to Portland, Oregon for weekends and as we follow a plant-based diet having places to go that are vegan-friendly is very important to us. Luckily, there are plenty of great places to try out as vegans. Here are 10 places we have found on our trips to Portland.

1. Bye and Bye, Alberta Street

We are always on the lookout for new places to eat when we travel to Portland, Oregon – which happens frequently throughout the year. One place that has been on my list is Bye and Bye on Alberta Street. Located along the trendy Mississippi Ave in Portland, No Bones Beach Club is Tiki-themed vegan restaurant with all the expected trapping expected of a Tiki Bar; surfboards, fishing nets and bamboo screens pineapples, coconuts; tropical drinks (with plenty of rum and coconuts) and tasty bites. While most Tiki menus contain a heavy focus on seafood and meat, No Bones replaces this with vegan alternatives such as jack fruit, soy curls and even cauliflower.

4. Off The Griddle, SE Foster Road

As with many of my favourite food experiences in Portland, Off The Griddle started life as part of the City’s vibrant food cart scene, before transitioning to become a bricks-and-mortar establishment.

Located in a less trendy part of town, South-East of downtown Off The Griddle is a classic comfort food restaurant. My idea of comfort food is hearty breakfasts and wholesome lunches that make you feel warm and full inside. Off The Griddle manages to fit the bill with its breakfast plates, waffles, burritos and sandwiches. Yummy!

5. Homegrown Smoker, N Lombard Street

We decided to take a break from our staple vegan diet of quinoa bowls and tofu hashes and try out some good old BBQ and comfort food at the Homegrown Smoker in North East Portland.

Despite our early reservations about Homegrown Smoker, we were glad to have seen beyond the slightly shabby (but clean) setting and truly enjoyed both of the dishes we were served. We’re definitely be coming back here on a future trip to Portland.

6. Prasad, NW Davis Street

We were looking for a cafe that served vegan breakfasts and after some research, I discovered Prasad, a vegan cafe, which by chance was very close to where our hotel.

There are two branches of Prasad and the one we had stumbled upon is found in Portland’s trendy Pearl District. It does not have its own storefront and is instead situated inside a yoga studio, Yoga Pearl.

The cafe itself is quite small but the setting in Yoga Pearl makes it feel open and roomy, but at the same time, the layout gives it a cosy feel. The seating is very basic but just seems to add to the general ambience.

After a hard morning (well not really) we were in need of something yummy, despite having had a large and filling breakfast. We were not on for a full-on meal so we decided we’d settle for a snack – we needed some pastries!

We had heard about a vegan bakery called Petunia’s on the periphery of Portland’s Pearl District so we decided this sounded perfect for what we needed.
